Odorous House Ants

The odorous house ant, Tapinoma sessile, also known as a "coconut ant", gets its name from the strong, rotten coconut-like smell it gives off when crushed. These tiny insects range in size from 1/16th of an inch to 1/8th of an inch long and can range from brown to black in color.

Alhtough they don't pose a public health risk, they can contaminate food and should therefore be avoided.

What Odorous House Ants Eat

Odorous house ants like to eat sweets, especially melon, but they'll eat most other household foods, especially those that contain sugar.

Odorous House Ant Nesting Locations

Indoors, these ants will colonize near heat sources or in insulation.

Outdoors, they'll make their homes under rocks, in exposed soil and in exterior wall cracks.

Nests have also been found in house plants and even in toilet lids.

Odorous House Ant Colonization

Colonies range in size from 100-10,000.
Each colony may house several queents.
Typical time to adult phase of development is 34-38 days.

If you take prompt control measures against odorous house ants as soon as you notice them, control can be relatively easy. However, the longer you wait, the larger the colony will be and the more difficult it is to get them under control.
