Termites - Frequently Asked Questions

Q. How do I know if I have termites?

Many times, a homeowner’s only indication of a potential termite infestation is the presence of swarmers, usually on warm days after a spring rain. See How Subterranean Termite Colonies Get Established on the About Termites page for more information.

Q. How do you get rid of termites?

I’m using the very effective, yet non-invasive Advance™ Termite Bait System from Whitemire-MicroGen. It uses the best designed station available to eliminate termites from your home, with minimal disturbance to the environment and low impact on your family. See Dura Tech's Termite Control Services for details.

Q. What’s a bait station?

See Termite Baiting Systems on this web site for complete details of termite bait systems and bait stations.

Q. Why do you think the Advance™ system is the best?

This baiting system is effective because it takes advantage of the termites’ behavior to eliminate the colony. Termites aggressively feed on the compressed termite bait containing the active ingredient. They then take it back to the colony to get rid of the termites in an around your home. The station design minimizes any tampering by children or pets and, due to its low-profile design, you will hardly notice it around your home.

Q. I’ve heard about drilling into concrete and pumping insecticides into the holes. Do you do that?

The Advance™ bait system is non-invasive in terms of installation of the system around your home. I won’t lift carpets or drill through concrete. Almost all of my work will be done on the outside, so there will be minimal disruption to your busy life. Instead of drilling every 12 inches, I’ll put a bait station on the outside of your home every 10 feet. To minimize impact on the environment, I won’t pump hundreds of gallons of liquid termiticide into the soil around your home. You won’t smell any chemical odors with this new system. You won’t have to move items away from garage walls, remove patio blocks, deck planks, or pull back carpet. I won’t inconvenience you with noisy interior drilling, cracked and broken tiles, or running a hose through rooms of your home.

Q. I have kids and pets – how do I know your methods are safe?

I practice Integrated Pest Management. These techniques are safer for your family and more environmentally friendly than traditional methods. When treating termites, I use a termite bait system that is proven safe and effective. I may also need to apply borates on unfinished wood surfaces or foam it into wall voids. These treatments are far safer and more environmentally friendly than traditional termiticides. For more information, see Treating Subterranean Termites on this web site.

Q. How much experience do you have?

I have more than 34 years of experience. When you hire me you know you will get the benefit of my vast experience in pest control, especially in termite control because I'll be the one servicing your property. For more information, see the About page.

More Questions

Q. Do you guarantee your work?

All of my work is guaranteed. In the case of termites, I provide you with a written guarantee that is left with you at the time of inspection. All terms are spelled out for you. While no pest control company will guarantee that termites will not damage your home, you can rest assured that if termites do come back, I’ll be there to eliminate them. Heavy activity can be addressed by installing additional stations, if needed.

Q. What’s involved with your annual termite service agreement?

Typically, on a termite service agreement, you receive monitoring and baiting services as needed, usually quarterly, but more frequently during times of active infestation. The service agreement is good for an entire year, and is renewable each year.

Q. Can’t I just buy something at the home center and take care of this myself?

Trying to handle a subterranean termite problem yourself could be disastrous. First, how do you know it’s termites you’re seeing? Is what you’re applying going to do any good? Will it harm the environment? Is pesticide available to the public going to be effective in eliminating termites? Why would you want to tackle this yourself when you can have a comprehensive inspection and evalutaion by a professional using a non-invasive, but effective treatment system that can eliminate the entire colony?

Q. Should I get more than one estimate for the job? What questions should I ask when getting other estimates?

Absolutely Yes, I encourage you to get other estimates, and I also encourage you to contact me if you already have an estimate. Be sure you know what the estimate includes and ask to see the content of any written guarantees they provide. Be sure you know who will do the work on your property and you get to meet that person. Of course the work must be guaranteed and the pest control must be licensed and insured. Always ask for the license. Make sure they are registered for termite control. Is this pest control operator a member of any regional or national pest management organizations? Can they give you references? Don't be pressured into signing a contract and remember, once you sign an agreement, you have three days to cancel the contract - that's the law in Massachusetts. You should wait until those three days have passed and you are sure about your selection before they start the work.

Q. I don’t think I have termites, why would I want to call you?

Termites can often go undetected while the colonies grow. Unlike liquid termiticides, termite bait stations can be used for proactive subterranean termite prevention, especially for those homes with a greater likelihood of infestation, including homes in heavily wooded locations, homes where neighbors have, or have had, termite infestations, older homes on stone or rubble foundations, houses with finished basements or inaccessible crawl spaces, where termites may be present but can’t be seen, houses with extensive mulch and/or landscape ties around them, which attract termites, homes with long runs of wood fences around the perimeter, homes with wood decks and wood outbuildings, including garages and sheds, and log homes.

Q. Will you pressure me to sign up when you come out?

NO, absolutely not. You have every right to think it over or get other estimates. I may call you at some time after the estimate if I haven't heard from you. Once you sign an agreement, you have three days to cancel the contract - that's the law in Massachusetts.

NOTE: While most pest control services can be quoted FREE over the phone, there is a $40 service charge for an in-person inspection and estimate, which you get back if you hire me to do the work. All termite issues require an in-person inspection.
